aNNa! You killed rAvaNa, the powerful rAkShasa king who ruled lankApuri with Your arrows. You removed the duhKa of dEvas like brahma, rudra and others. They all come to tirumalai to worship You. Oh! BagavAn! You should remove my duhKa too!

Like the anthill is always an abode of venomous creatures, so too lankApuri was always an abode of wicked kings like mAli and others.

Once mAli chased away garuDa hitting him with a mace. BagavAn got terribly angry at him and killed him with garuDa as His vAhana. This episode is found in the uttara kANDa of Sree rAmAyaNA.’

He wears tuzhasi mAla only to show His readiness to help the Baktas. AzhwAr says—‘You reside in tirumala whose peaks make the sun and the moon to detour. I implore You to help me’.

BagavAn! You are mercy incarnation. You swallow all the worlds, oceans etc. when praLaya comes in order to protect these from being swallowed by water. You reside in tirumalai because of the compassion You have towards the samsAris like me in order to enable them to come and worship You. You are sweet like nectar. You should save me!

Oh! swAmi! You reside in tirumala—whose peaks touch the paramapada—taking it as Your permanent abode. Your paratva is revealed by Your act of measuring the worlds with just two steps begging them from mahAbali. Your soulaBya is revealed by Your act of staling the butter, ghee etc kept high in a ‘uri’ by Aichchis out of reach of You. aNDA! You should bless me with Your unbound mercy!

You took narasimha avatAra coming from an ordinary pillar. You tore the powerful chest of hiraNya with great anger as he was torturing Your Bakta. You reside in the great tirumala in order to bless Your Baktas and listen to their pleadings. You lie on tiruanandAzhwAn to give ‘darSana’ to dEvas who want to see You. You are angry at Your dAsa’s enemies and kind to Your dAsas.

AzhwAr says—ennAnai! ennappA! You should remove my human births and take me into You. You who reside in tirumala reside in my heart too! How wonderful!

In the past pAsuras AzhwAr was pleading ‘aDiyEn iDarai kaLaiyAyE’ ‘aDiyErkku aruLAyE’ ‘aDiyEnukku aruL puriyAyE’ ‘kurikkoL enni neeyE’ and so on. BagavAn took compassion on him and says ‘AzhwAr! I am always in search of a Bakta, You have come to seek my tiruvaDi shall I ever leave You?’ So saying He enters AzhwAr’s heart to reside there.

He is very far to those who don’t believe Him and only close to those who believe Him, trust Him and worship Him. This is very evident as in the case of duryOdana and arjuna. He is a ‘mAyan’—does astonishing actions which are unimaginable. Hence He has come to reside in my heart who is a very poor Bakta. Now I feel I don’t know anyone, don’t care to know anything other than Him.

Oh! You are ever shining highly effulgent poorNa! You are a chintAmaNi a wish fulfilling gem! You reside in tirumala but prefer to come and stay in my mind! How fortunate I am! I shall never let You go out of my mind.

AzhwAr is very much astonished at His act of coming and entering his mind. There are three separate sentences—

You have come- vandAi

You have entered my mind—en manam puhundAi

You like to stay there for ever—manni ninrAi

Instead of one single sentence.

vandAi—You have come leaving Your excellent abode of paramapada and tiruppAkaDal

en manam puhundAi—You searched for a place to stay and found mine. Why did You choose mine when there are highly efficient yogis and highly erudite jnAnis and highly loving Baktas.

manni ninrAi—Even though my mind is not pure and suitable for Your living, You like to stay there for ever! What a love You have for me. (a mean fellow as I am).

kozhunjuDarE—Even when You stay in my polluted mind, Your effulgence never wanes.

chintAmaNi—A divine gem which is like kapaga tree is wish-fulfilling.

In tirumala emberumAn resides. There are hunters in the mountain who roam about with their bows and arrows keeping watch over Him against any enemies. They are like peiyAzhwAr who sang ‘pallANDu pallANDu’ for BagavAn out of motherly affection and concern for His safety. In Sree rAmAyaNa guNapperumAn kept watch over the divine pair rAma and seeta out of love for them and concern for their safety. Those who read these pASuras sung by tirumangai AzhwAr will certainly reach paramapada and become one of the nitya sooris.
