Oh! tirumalaiyappa! So far i had been running after my Sareera bandhus like father, mother, wife, children and so on and spent my life fulfilling their wishes. Now i have come out of that delusion and seek You who is my real bandhu, my Atma bandhu. Don’t ever neglect me as a ‘mean fellow’ but take as one of Your dAsas. No puNya karma of my past can do this except Your ‘apAra kAruNya’ (infinite mercy).
periyavAchchAn piLLai Sri sookti—The rich Lords usually have pet dogs which they keep for their pleasure. Similarly AzhwAr says he is BagavAn’s ‘pet dog’ and He is his Lord. Here is ‘swAmi – dAsa’ sambandha indicated.

Oh! BagavAn! You reside in tirumala that abounds in natural beauty. Before coming to You i had been roaming behind the doe-eyed damsels seeking meager pleasures. Fortunately i run to seek Your tiruvaDi now to Atma for all the sins in the world committed by me alone which would have placed me in all kinds of hills inflicting all kinds of tortures. Ah! i am saved by Your grace!

AzhwAr says—before coming here i was such a wicked fellow that i never uttered kind words to those poor unfortunate men who begged; never had any compassion on animals which i killed for sports or for food. But now, because of Your grace, i seek You who reside in tirumala—a mountain on the top of which the mountains—like huge clouds gather to pour rain making the place cool and pleasant—and have come running to You even before the blood in my had has dried (anrE vandaDaindEn).

AzhwAr says—i had been born in many kinds of species according to my pApas and puNyas. i had never done any good to anyone nor any dharma to the needy. The consequence of these is that i had a lot of sufferings in my life. This Your grace on me put a full stop to all these and i feel gratified to You who reside in tiruvEngaDam.

AzhwAr continues—‘i was a fool! i left no sins uncommitted. i felt exhausted of my acts. i felt very weak that i could not utter even the smallest name of Yours. ‘i felt why should i do these sinful acts?’ Then my this remorse finally has sent me to Your tiruvaDi. You are sarvaSakta whereas i am totally aSakta. You reside in this tirumala which has mountains all around forming its natural forts. tiruvEngaDavA! please have mercy on me and protect me!

As a house is made up of bricks, stones, sand, water, etc. so also this Sareera is made up of the products of pancha Bootas (AkASa, air, fire, water, and earth) namely—flesh, blood, bones etc. It is not a strong ‘house’ too. My body is full of sores giving endless suffering to me. i am totally averse to taking any more bodies. Hence i seek Your tiruvaDi. Please help me and save me!

When i was a lad i was totally ignorant and innocent, when i grew up to be young i was a fool running after sense pleasures. Now i have become wise in seeking Your tiruvaDi. Oh! hari! You should protect me! You reside in tirumala which is beautiful with forests where wild elephants roam freely. hari—has three meanings
1. Lion - He is like a lion, a king, difficult to defeat
2. Taker - He always takes away our pApas and makes us pure
3. hari - The Supreme god nArAyaNa.

Oh! swAmi! tiruvEngaDamuDaiyAnE! i have taken many births, which plainly indicate my karmas have not exhausted. Now in this janma i think of You, meditate on You and love You. Still i am afraid that my past karmas are so much that i may have to take many more births in spite of my Bakti to You.
This pASura can be interpreted i the following way too—i had taken many births but i had wasted them without thinking of You. At last in this birth i am able to think of You. But what about my future births? Will they be same as this or not?

Oh! mAyavA! mAdhavA! vEngaDavA! You have excellent guNas which have no bounds. Still You don’t tolerate pApis. But there is periya pirATTi near You who does puruShakAra i.e. like a mother she speaks softly of us. But alas! my papas are infinite! i have nowhere to go except You! Oh! vEngaDavA! who reside in tirumalai which has abundant lotus lakes full of honey! take pity on me and save me!.
pAvamE Seidu pAviyAnEn—Some do pApa but gain puNya in the end. Like SiSupAla, who always condemned kriShNa finally got mOkSha. Some do puNya but get pApa as a result. daSaratha was true to his word of promise (puNya) but ended up in pApa which prevented him going to paramapada. AzhwAr says—my case is different. i do nothing but pApa and get the fruits of pApa alone.

Our swAmi is—like a dark cloud; is like eyes and prANa to all the creatures of this world; is worshipped by nityasooris; is understood through vEdas; resides in tirumala—sung by tirumangai AzhwAr, the chief of tirumangai which is a city surrounded by forts. Those who read these ten pASuras will be rid of the obstacles to mOkSha.
