Oh! my swAmi of naimiSAraNya! i was fool to run after women having beautiful breasts, charming smile, small forehead, wide shoulders and such beauties. Oh! For a long time i had been like this an utter fool. i never had any thought of correcting myself since i never had any intention of coming out of samsAra. Then suddenly, because of Your grace, i started thinking over my Atma swaroopa. After thinking, i came to realize that i should not be running after worldly pleasures but instead seek Your tiruvaDi alone that gives me the permanent abode in the AnandalOka of paramapada.

Oh! emberumAn! without knowing Your greatness i had been running after women attracted by their beautiful eyes. i ran after the worldly pleasures thinking they would give me unending joy. Alas! they are “alpa” (meager) and “astira” (temporary). Now i come to know the greatness of your tiruvaDi which the nityasooris seek. i have come out of my delusions. i am grateful to You since You have showered grace on me till i cry “enough! enough!”. Oh! kriShNa! Oh! dEvAdi dEva! Oh! mAya! i can never forget You.

Oh! BagavAn! You churned the pArkaDal when dEvas requested Your help. You are very compassionate. i had wandered and acted as i pleased. In order to please the harlots i had resorted to gambling and thieving. Now i fear and tremble at the thought of tortures the yamaBaTTas going to inflict on me. Please show Your infinite mercy on me. i seek Your help. Oh! BagavAn of naimiSAraNya! please help me.

When a person dies – who had neglected his wife and ran after others’ property and wives – yamaBaTTas will drag them to naraka. They will torture that pApi till they are tired of punishing. They throw him in a corner and take rest. They will show a burning copper statue of a woman and order him to embrace it. AzhwAr says “ i am afraid i had done such pApas and fear the punishment by the yamaBaTTas. Oh! You are trusted by Your Baktas as the sole rakShaka. i too trust You and beg You to save me from such hell”.

When a poor hungry man and came and stood at my door step begging for a handful of food, i refused to give him even though i had plenty at home and sent him away with harsh words. Oh! i was such a base fellow! Alas! i now fear and tremble when i think of the suffering i have to undergo in the hell at the hands of cruel yamaBaTTas. Oh! BagavAn! i seek your mercy.

i was a crooked chap finding pleasure in violence; i was happy in harming others; i had ferocious hounds as my companions in hunting and killing animals. i had spent my life in roaming here and there seeking pleasure in such things. Oh! The agony that i have caused in them is more than they do in the hell! It is as if i have reduced the glory of hell! Oh! BagavAn! i seek your tiruvaDi. Please show mercy on me.

Oh! BagavAn! With great anger You killed the kappittAsura who haunted the kapitta tree. Indeed You are death to those asuras as they are the enemies of your Baktas. You are in naimiSAraNya as well as in my heart. i used to think, speak and act wickedly. Then i heard the wise men describing the way to hell, the tortures that pApees undergo. At that i thought of my past life and trembled with fear. Oh! BagavAn! i seek your tiruvaDi and your mercy.

Oh! BagavAn at naimiSAraNya! Once the kalipuruSha ordered the five indriyas “go and catch this AzhwAr and torture him as much as you can”. Those indriyas did obey his order. But with Your grace i threw them away so far that they don’t dare come again. From whom did i get this strength? – from singing Your hymns and worshiping Your tiruvaDi.

Oh! BagavAn! You are the consort of periya pirATTi born in a lotus. You lie in tirupArkaDal with her for the dAsas to seek You. i too seek Your tiruvaDi since i am afraid that the time will come when this body – made up of flesh as the wall, the bones as pillars and nine openings as doors – is going depart. This is my surrendering to You is not easily got. Perhaps i had performed tapas in my previous janmas.

Even dEvEndra comes to seek the tiruvaDi of BagavAn at naimiSAraNya with all the dEvas and tells them “Oh! dEvas! if you want to get rid off the duhKas let us go to naimiSAraNya and seek Him as our rakShaka”. Such is the greatness of this divya dESa. If these pASuras of tirumangai AzhwAr – whose Bakti grew more and more on meditating on Him – are read with BAva, they will reach paramapada and live with nityasooris.
